Isles stop skid, halt Caps' 4-game run

NEW YORK (AP) Hours after getting a vote of confidence from his coach, Jaroslav Halak came through with one of his best games of the season.

Halak made 31 saves, and the New York Islanders beat the Washington Capitals 3-1 on Monday night to snap a three-game winless streak.

It was the second time this season that Halak held an opponent to a single goal and the third time New York has allowed one goal as a team. Halak's strong performance came after coach Doug Weight sternly defended his goaltenders following the team's skate Monday morning. New York was 1-3-1 over its last five games.

Perry injured as Ducks edge Hurricanes

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) In the very first period after the Anaheim Ducks finally got captain Ryan Getzlaf and Jakob Silfverberg back from long-term injuries, Corey Perry hobbled off the ice with a lower-body injury that sent him to a hospital.

"It just seems like it's a regular day for us," Getzlaf said with a shake of his head.

Perreault scores 2, Jets roll by Canucks

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Mathieu Perreault viewed his 100th NHL goal as a lucky tap rather than a highlight-reel milestone.

The Jets forward scored two twice and added an assist to help Winnipeg halt a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night.

Stars beat Rangers in SO, end slide at 3

NEW YORK (AP) The Dallas Stars put themselves in position for a big win on Monday night. It just took them a while to finish off the New York Rangers, thanks to Ondrej Pavelec.

Jason Spezza scored in the shootout, and the Stars snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Rangers.

Bernier stops 39 as Avs top Penguins 2-1

PITTSBURGH (AP) Colorado defenseman Mark Barberio was a healthy scratch last week against Buffalo. He made a huge play Monday night against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions.

Barberio scored in the third period and Jonathan Bernier stopped 39 shots, helping the Avalanche to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Matheson lifts Panthers past Wings in OT

DETROIT (AP) �� It was a night for ending droughts as far as the Florida Panthers were concerned.

The Panthers hadn't won in overtime all season. Defenseman Mike Matheson hadn't scored a goal all season. But in one quick shot, both of those slumps came to a halt.

TORONTO (AP) Being a backup goalie isn't easy. Toronto's Curtis McElhinney thinks he's figured it out.

One night after starter Frederik Andersen beat Pittsburgh on the road, McElhinney stopped 41 shots in the Maple Leafs' 1-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night.

Wild blow 3-goal lead, top Sharks in OT

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Nino Niederreiter was frustrated at losing the puck during overtime. Once he got it back, he wasn't going to let another opportunity pass.

Niederreiter scored 3:26 into the extra period and the Minnesota Wild beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Sunday night after squandering a three-goal lead.
